Sunday 22nd August – walk *** – River Gipping, Bramford to Sproughton – cloudy with showers.

After yesterday’s 20-mile bike ride was not sure what to do today, not helped by another cloudy day, so far August’s weather has been mixed at best, I could have sailed on the Stour but with a few days of wind coming next week we decided to head over to Ipswich to visit my Dad as have not seen him for ages! Still managed my exercises in the back garden as Mags tends her garden, then I pack lunch and we set off for Ipswich around 12.30. We park at Bramford near the River Gipping where I used to go fishing in another lifetime! After a yummy roll we head off on a walk down the river to Sproughton just as it starts to rain! The meadows are very overgrown at the moment and the river is pretty much covered in duck weed as we head down stream in the light rain. Luckily, we reach the trees which offer some cover. This is a good path suitable for cycling so might be tempted to bring our bikes another time. It is lovely walking here even in the rain which is not great especially as I am carrying two cameras! Mag gets a fleeting glimpse of a Kingfisher plus some moorhen chicks as we reach the lock at Sproughton sheltering under the trees for a bit as the rain increases. The mill pool here is beautiful set off by a horse chestnut tree in Autumn colours already with the church in the background and the wood footbridge over to the flats, in the converted mill. We continue down river past the riverside bungalows and several spots I used to fish, happy days to the big sluice and onto the A 14 bridge covered in graffiti and joked this must be river Banksy :) We then retraced our step back with the rain now stopped scaring off a heron was we passed the newly made water meadows and back to the van via a short detour through the woods. We then visit my Dad actually stopping for the best part of three hours having a really nice catch up over a cuppa.
Hopefully I will get a windsurf foil at Bradfield tomorrow and noticed they used my Felixstowe beach hut pic on this evening BBC Look East weather forecast, always nice making it my 28th pic to be used:)
